The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration recently awarded MARTA and two other Georgia transit agencies $31 million in grants. MARTA will receive $19.3 million from the grants to purchase additional electric buses and charging equipment to replace compressed natural gas buses.
In addition to replacing older buses, the grants aim to improve overall air quality in the Atlanta area and support the transit workforce. Transit workers can join a two-year apprenticeship program at participating local technical colleges to receive skills training.
MARTA continues to transition away from gas-fueled buses as it introduces Atlanta’s first rapid transit bus.
