Buckhead’s movement toward independent cityhood on hold

by The 100 Companies

In October 2021, calls were made for the  Buckhead suburb to separate itself from the city of Atlanta. Largely due to increasing crime rates, the movement was also fueled by then Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottom’s strained relationships with state-level leadership.

In recent weeks, Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan assigned a state Senate bill, which could allow for voting on the cityhood on November ballots, to a committee. But the Senate stated it won’t take up the measure during the current legislative session.

With continued opposition from Duncan and House Speaker David Ralston, a bill will have difficulty moving forward.
