To celebrate The Charlotte Observer’s 100th anniversary, I was charged with assembling and hosting a series of Carolina-born speakers. Rev. Billy Graham was a natural honoree.
In 1995, when Graham’s crusade filled the Georgia Dome as part of pre-Olympic hoopla, I took my two children, ages 10 and 12. For a boy raised Catholic, I was intrigued by the spiritual experience.
At the end, when Graham conducted his traditional call to the altar for anyone so moved that evening to pledge their life to Jesus, son Thomas stood up and walked towards the stage. I proudly followed him.
