The #MeToo movement has brought some shocking misbehavior to light. Bad behavior is real, pervasive and includes all forms of discrimination and harassment. There is no place for it in the workplace.
Addressing misbehavior can be challenging. First, managers must define unacceptable behavior and communicate that regularly. Second, human resources must be a paragon of confidentiality and fairness in hearing and assessing complaints. Finally, managers must collaborate with HR to resolve issues decisively.
Successful organizations foster teamwork. Teamwork requires trust. Bad behavior destroys trust. Managers must see that bad behavior is uncovered and results in bad consequences for the guilty.
