“My mom bought me my first 35mm camera but said I had to take a class first.”

Byron Small’s photographs wouldn’t have graced the pages of the Atlanta Business Chronicle for the past 14 years had it not been for an unpaid summer internship he pursued while in art school.

At the Miami Herald, Byron chased truck wrecks, boat fires and even a presidential candidate who dared the media to find him in an uncompromising position (they did).

Growing up on a small Florida farm, Byron submitted a photo of three little pigs to the local paper and proudly showed off his first published work to his high school classmates – bringing into focus his life’s new passion.
