Week #11: Music From the Gods

by admin

I can’t remember the first time I heard music, but it probably was on a Saturday afternoon, in my dad’s car. He listened religiously each week to WABE-FM’s radio broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera.

I didn’t happen to fall in love with opera, but I did with other genres, including rock ‘n’ roll, bluegrass, reggae, Cajun, soul and classical.

Already this year, I’ve attended one of the most memorable concerts of my life when 60 of my friends and family members grooved last Friday in the Fox Theatre to an amazing array of artists celebrating the music of Gregg Allman. Please view slideshow above by friend Tom Calk. This Saturday, Chuck Leavell leads another group of musicians (with Gregg and the ASO – see Music below) celebrating Otis Redding and Georgia music. I’ll be there as well.

The lineup for this year’s New Orleans Jazz Festival is irresistible and my friends and I have already bought tickets to upcoming music festivals in Florida and North Carolina.

How to explain the magical nature of music, one of God’s most precious gifts that sweeten our ears with divinely inspired sounds – elevating an otherwise normal moment? I will continue to enjoy music here as long as I can. In heaven, my dad now tells me, they play opera 24 hours a day.
