A Buck’s Head

by Chris Schroder

For $650, Henry Irby purchased 202 acres in 1837 at the intersection of Peachtree, Roswell and West Paces Ferry to build a general store and tavern to serve the rich and poor. Today, it’s one of the most affluent areas in the Southeast.  A community grew around the tavern and became well known after the Civil War’s Battle of Peach Tree Creek.

The “Buckhead” name is said to come from a story where Irby killed a buck and mounted the head for all to see. Even after a campaign to change the name to Northside Park, the title “Buckhead” endured.
