There are two basic ways to increase our energy: we can build our stamina through sleep and exercise, or temporarily boost ourselves with stimulants like caffeine.
Happiness works in a similar way. We can build our lasting “happiness stamina” through meaningful, fulfilling activities like relationship-building, travel, philanthropy and learning, but also temporarily “boost” our happiness with material things, like lattes, bacon and BMWs.
Caffeine without exercise leads to burnout and health issues. A pleasure-only happiness diet leads to dissatisfaction and depression. The first principal of leading a happy life is ensuring a constant balance between happiness and pleasure!
