The pituitary gland is an endocrine (hormone secreting) gland nestled in at the base of the brain, resting in a small, bony cavity known as the sella turnica.

This tiny gland is the size of a pea, and weighs in at around 0.5 grams, but don’t let its miniscule size fool you. This overachieving little guy secretes no fewer than 9 different hormones that regulate homeostasis; our normal bodily functions.

Hormones that regulate growth, fluid balance, breast milk production, prepare the uterus lining for pregnancy, stimulate the thyroid, and others are all the products of the pituitary gland.
