Known to my kids for creating a small crisis during every trip, I managed to pack several into our 1996 trip to France.
Driving onto the grounds of a remote 1399 Loire Valley chateau – a stay won in a charity auction – we set out to enjoy our first taste of French food only to discover all the restaurants and stores were closed Sundays in nearby Vendome. Starving, we roamed the chateau’s gardens, devouring raspberries, our only meal till Monday.
Returning from Paris another day, I filled up with the wrong gas. We enjoyed a day at a roadside mechanic’s home.
