“I was really concerned about my son because I did not want to lose my young black male.”
Having read the statistics on young black males who “get lost” in public schools, Valarie Wilson and her husband were happy to announce at their family dinner table that son Nicholas was going to private middle school.
Her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Wilson, who had integrated Decatur schools 50 years earlier, spoke next. “You will NOT take my grandson to private school. What you will do is walk through that school and talk to the principal.”
Nicholas went to the public school and today is a student at Georgia State while Valarie has just declared as a candidate for State School Superintendent.
