Observed on April 17, National Kickball Day celebrates the playground classic many people remember from recess, gym class and neighborhood parks.
Kickball grew out of a 1917 children’s game called “Kick Baseball,” created as a simple way to teach the basics of baseball with a red rubber ball and fewer rules. By the mid-1900s, it had become a staple of American gym classes, schoolyards and summer camps. Today, the game still shows up in schools and parks, and even adult social leagues.
