History of the kazoo and more at new exhibit in Macon

by The 100 Companies

Legend has it that the kazoo was invented in the 1840s in Macon by Alabama Vest, a freed slave who introduced the instrument at the Georgia State Fair as the “Down South Submarine.”

The Tubman Museum – one of the largest museums in the Southeast dedicated to educating people about the art, history and culture of African Americans – opened a new exhibit on National Kazoo Day (Jan. 28) that features the history of the kazoo.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9AM-5PM. and is located at 310 Cherry St. in Macon. Adult tickets are $10 with discounts available.
