The dramatic increase of divorce among those over 50 in recent years has become so prevalent, the trend has been given a name: gray divorce. Since 1990, the divorce rate among Americans over 50 has doubled, and now one out of every four people divorcing is over 50, according to The Washington Post.
Why the change? Sociologists attribute it to new financial independence among women, allowing them to afford divorce, and individuals having higher expectations of a successful marriage.
