Today is National Chocolate Chip Day, celebrating the tiny baking ingredient that helped create America’s favorite cookie.
Chocolate chips were created in the 1930s by Ruth Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts after she added chopped chocolate to cookie dough expecting it to melt completely. Instead, the pieces held their shape, helping create the chocolate chip cookie. Nestlé later partnered with Wakefield to print the recipe on its packaging and began selling chocolate morsels nationwide. Today, chocolate chips appear in everything from pancakes and muffins to trail mix and ice cream, making them one of baking’s recognizable ingredients.
To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day with a nod to it also being National Bread Pudding Day, What’s Gaby Cooking’s chocolate chip bread pudding layers cubes of brioche bread – fitting since yesterday was National Brioche Day – with chocolate chips and a rich vanilla custard, then bakes everything until golden on top and soft, gooey and chocolate-filled in the center.
