As of Jan. 1, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights will remain closed through August 2025 for a 24,000-square-foot expansion.
The project began in March 2024 and will include the construction of the East and West Wings, which will feature classrooms, event spaces, a café and new galleries, including a family gallery and exhibits on the Reconstruction era. The expansion will also include upgrades to existing exhibits, including the lunch counter sit-in simulation.
During the closure, the museum will host community events across Atlanta and continue programs like human rights training. The center aims to reopen by October 2025.
