Observed on May 27, National Sunscreen Day encourages people to protect their skin before peak summer sun exposure.
Created by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, the holiday raises awareness about sun safety and the risks of ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreen works by either absorbing UV rays through chemical filters or reflecting them with mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. UVA rays penetrate deeper into skin and are linked to premature aging, while UVB rays primarily cause sunburns.
Since both types of ultraviolet radiation can contribute to skin cancer, dermatologists recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen to guard against both.
