Two Georgia natives were part of the U.S. Women’s National Team’s (USWNT) 23-player roster in the battle for the FIFA Women’s World Cup that kicked off Thursday, July 20 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Kelley O’Hara, “Fayetteville’s fastest feet,” is a 4-time player in the FIFA World Cup, helping USWNT claim victory twice – in 2019 and 2015. Emily Sonnett, “Marietta’s double-trouble marvel,” brought UVA multiple regional and national championships in college and has won numerous awards, including the ESPNW Soccer Player of the Year.

The reigning champions were favored to win but were eliminated after losing to Sweden in the quarterfinals.
