New book ‘Civil Sights’ captures essence of Sweet Auburn

by The 100 Companies

Atlanta real estate developer and preservationist Gene Kansas’ new book, “Civil Sights,” features significant landmarks, adaptive reuse projects and the intersection of design and community, spotlighting Atlanta’s historic Sweet Auburn district.

Featuring illustrations by Clay Kiningham, the book highlights the neighborhood’s iconic architecture and its role in civil rights history. Inspired by events like the 2008 tornado that damaged key landmarks, Kansas spent eight years bringing the project to life.

Both visually stunning and historically significant, “Civil Sights” serves as a call to action for preservationists, students and developers to protect and restore Sweet Auburn’s past rather than erase it.
