The “Last Great Race on Earth,” the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, is one of the most fascinating competitive events to me. Maybe it’s because, having grown up in the South, I’ve never experienced anything like it.
Saturday, March 2, the Iditarod begins its 47th year with about 70 participating teams expected. The 12-16 canines per team are some of the greatest athletes ever, treated with respect and first-rate care while covering nearly 1,000 miles of the roughest, but most beautiful, terrain in 9-17 days.
Maybe one day I’ll volunteer to experience it all in person.
