Georgia is introducing an updated version of its English Language Arts standards this school year. Included in the new standards is the reintroduction of cursive handwriting, with manuscript lessons starting in kindergarten, and lessons for reading and writing in cursive being required for grades 3-5.
Officials say cursive writing builds automaticity and speed, freeing students’ cognitive load to better organize and articulate ideas. Supporters also note benefits for spelling and fluency, particularly aiding students with dyslexia through the continuous flow of cursive.
The Georgia Department of Education has released a guidance packet for parents to help with the handwriting courses.
