Each March, Women’s History Month celebrates the achievements, contributions and lasting impact of women throughout history.
The observance grew from Women’s History Week, first recognized in 1981, and expanded in 1987 to honor women’s influence across culture, politics, science and business. Communities mark the month with educational programs, exhibits and events highlighting trailblazers past and present. The Law Library of Congress provides a guide to laws and proclamations behind Women’s History Month.
From pioneering activists to innovators shaping today’s industries, the celebration encourages reflection on progress made while recognizing work still ahead to achieve gender equality and opportunities for women.
