Of the many sacred spaces found in Atlanta, the Cannon Chapel at Emory University stands out.
Located on campus on the north side of the quad, the chapel was completed in 1981 and was designed by Alabama native Paul Rudolph. The building is a composition of architectural concrete vaults with terra cotta roofs, and it exploits natural light in a way that is unique and transcendent.
The architecture adheres to an aesthetic from the 60s and 70s that was known as “Brutalism” – decidedly modern, the building is not without its critics but it offers an exceptional experience on the inside.
