Mike Egan, lawyer, veteran of two wars, former Georgia legislator and federal associate attorney general, died last week at age 89.
Elected in 1966 as a Republican, Mike was one of a handful who voted to seat controversial Democrat Julian Bond in 1967, one of the first to submit legislation banning the Confederate symbol from Georgia’s flag and was voted “the Conscience of the Senate.” President Jimmy Carter appointed him associate attorney general in 1977.
A smart and graceful Savannah native, he’ll be remembered honorably by thousands and buried today by his lovely widow Donna, six children and 17 grandchildren.
