The first 911 emergency call was placed on Feb. 16, 1968, in Haleyville, Alabama, launching a system that would transform emergency response nationwide.
Alabama House Speaker Rankin Fite made the call to a local police station using equipment installed by a regional telephone company. Before 911, callers had to dial full 5-to-7-digit local numbers or relied on operators, slowing response times. The new three-digit number created a universal shortcut for emergencies. Adoption spread gradually, reaching nationwide coverage by the late 1990s.
Today, more than 240 million calls are made annually, making 911 one of America’s most essential public safety systems.
