The history of Georgia’s most visited attraction

At 1,686 feet tall, Stone Mountain is the world’s largest piece of exposed granite. It’s considered one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders, bringing in nearly 4 million visitors each year.

The original idea for the carvings of Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Jefferson Davis, which have become a controversial topic, were first conceived in 1915 by Helen Plane, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

In 1958, the state of Georgia bought the land surrounding the mountain to create a 3,200-acre park, and in spring of 1965, Stone Mountain Park officially opened for all to enjoy.
