Coca-Cola’s historic ties to Atlanta

by sally@the100companies.com

Atlanta’s known for many things, including being the birthplace of Coca-Cola. Back in the year 1886, Dr. John S. Pemberton created his own syrup and combined it with carbonated water from a pharmacy. His partner, Frank M. Robinson, named the tasty creation Coca-Cola.

Before Pemberton’s death in 1888, his soda fountains began taking off, so he sold a large portion of his company to Asa G. Candler. Candler expanded the soda fountains outside of Atlanta and sold sole bottling rights for $1.

Once bottled, everyone had access to Coke, bringing the brand nationwide attention and eventually worldwide expansion.
