Rhodes Family Bakery

by Chris Schroder

Atlantans who regularly enjoy sweets from Rhodes Family Bakery have the Stock Market Crash of 1929 to thank. During the Great Depression, Magdaline Rhodes started selling baked goods out of her home.

The cakes and cookies were an instant success. While most businesses across the nation struggled, Mrs. Rhodes’ flourished. The Rhodes family opened a store in 1934 on Piedmont Road. After relocating to Cheshire Bridge Road in 1953, it became the first freestanding bakery in the Southeast. A second location opened in Roswell in 1997.

Mrs. Rhodes’ original recipes can still be enjoyed at either Rhodes Family Bakery location.
