Sustainable Forestry Documentary Screening & Symposium

November 16 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

A third of the nation’s forests are contained within the South, and nearly half of those forests are in the hands of family landowners with low incentives to retain ownership and high incentives to sell to developers. Clearly Southern forests are at risk. By 2060, the region could lose enough forests to fill the Grand Canyon 19 times over.

Enter Keeping Forests: an Atlanta-based organization, led by Executive Director Laura Calandrella, dedicated to sustaining Southern forests by expanding economic opportunities that use forests in a financially and environmentally sustainable way. They advocate for using forests ecosystems in their entirety. This means using every part of a tree down to its sawdust, but also making the most of recreation opportunities, freshwater systems, carbon capture methods, and more.

On Saturday, November 16, Keeping Forests will host a symposium and screening of Family Tree. Directed by Jennifer MacArthur, Family Tree follows two Black families in North Carolina as they take on the challenge of building intergenerational wealth while raising healthy forests.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A and panel discussion about joining the movement to conserve Southern woodlands for generations to come. Calandrella, MacArthur and the two families featured in the film will be among the panel of experts.
