Carrying the Torch

by Jan Schroder

My late dear friend Ann Morris organized the 2002 Olympic torch run for the Salt Lake City Olympics. She called one morning in January 2002, saying there were two slots open a week later in the middle of the night in Klamath Falls, Oregon, if we could get there.

I quickly called my son Thomas and now-stepdaughter Catherine Butsch and offered them the opportunity. Catherine’s mom Jan and my daughter Sally joined us for the cross-country flight and crazy drive.

We fought icy roads and never saw daylight in the town, but created lifetime memories – even at 4AM.
