Let’s hope for a surprise of compromise

Although it’s easy to be concerned by how polarized America appears to be today, perhaps now is the perfect time for counterbalancing compromises in Congress.

I’m reminded of the 1790 battles between Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton over the national bank relieving state debts and the location of the nation’s capital. Brilliantly recounted in Lin Manuel-Miranda’s “Hamilton” song, “The Room Where it Happens,” what seemed like gridlock turned into, over a series of discussions far from the din, a compromise that advanced the nation.

Could we make such moves today, again proving the genius of our founders?
