Leaving A Legacy in Bricks

by Jan Schroder
Outside of Chris Schroder's childhood home

When it came to naming buildings, parks and highways, my dad would quote his grandfather. He gave away most of what he earned, saying, “Fool’s names, like fool’s faces, are often seen in public places.”

I‘ve not had much wealth to give away but as a bricklayer, I guess I’m a fool about leaving my name on my work. Recently in Greenville, SC, where my two children were born and I lived for four years, I revisited one of my favorite 1985 works of art.

Nobody was home, but I wandered down the driveway. My initials were still intact.
