Changing tradition not so easy

by Jan Schroder

I’ve always fancied myself a change agent. Joining a traditional college fraternity, I decided it was time the boys invited in their first female “brother.”

Expecting lots of yelling, fighting and retribution from my brethren, I surprisingly found them graciously lined up at rush events asking her all those piercing scientific and scholarly questions that were part of our rigorous entry process.

Although my candidate wasn’t voted in, she was honored to be considered. I was flummoxed by the outbreak of civility and my tribe’s failure to take their opportunity to oust me while they had a perfectly good chance.
