Football returns, despite drop in popularity

My adrenalin’s already pumping as the Atlanta Falcons kick off the NFL season Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles. I’ve been a rabid fan since attending their inaugural 1966 season. Could this be their year?

Unfortunately, interest in football seems to be waning with fewer viewers tuning in each year. The Washington Post reports high school participation is down 6.6 percent in the past decade due to costs, demographic shifts and injuries.

I used to read the entire sports section as a youngster, but as life got busier, I’ve gradually jettisoned other sports one by one. Football still rules, though.
