While America celebrated National Donut Day this past Friday, I agonized over its spelling: donut or doughnut?
The original spelling was doughnut, but then shortened to donut in the 1800s. When Dunkin’ Donuts was founded in 1950, the short form became abundant.
For professional research purposes, I sampled three of Atlanta’s favorite shops to see what makes them special.
- Krispy Kreme Doughnuts – original spelling, can’t eat just one
- Sublime Doughnuts – original spelling, birthday doughnut box
- Revolution Doughnuts – original spelling, Decatur powerhouse
I finally concluded that, while the original spelling remains the king, both spellings are equally delicious. More research needed!
