Not So Secret Anymore

by Jan Schroder

I’ve always been semi-ashamed of an all-night caper I organized in college.

After I signed off on galleys of our student publication, The Declaration, someone slipped in an article revealing the newest members of the University of Virginia’s oldest secret society. I organized a posse, kidnapped all copies, reprinted the offending pages and re-distributed the paper, late. I was called before the dean and slammed on a rival publication’s front page for obstructing journalism.

Last Saturday, attending a reunion, I perked up when a history speaker reverently recounted “the legend.” Finally, I was happy to own it.
