Mockingbird Week

by Jan Schroder

I’m ambivalent about reading Harper Lee’s second novel, Go Set a Watchman, which publishes next week. Both To Kill a Mockingbird and its 1962 movie have shared a sacred spot on my favorites list since childhood.

I’m hoping a disputed sequel won’t diminish such indelible characters as Calpurnia, Jem, Scout, Dill, Atticus and Boo Radley.

I am looking forward to attending playwright Melita Easters’ one-woman production of Nelle’s Story: The World of Harper Lee, which traces the life of the reclusive author. The play runs tonight through July 19 at Midtown’s Synchronicity Theatre, a fitting kickoff to a Mockingbird-full week.
