Reminiscing on Atlanta’s favorite Christmas tradition

Atlanta’s favorite Christmas tradition

For the past 72 years, Atlanta has welcomed the start of the Christmas season by lighting a giant tree for all to see. As long as I can remember it’s been located at Lenox Square, but it actually began in 1948 atop the old Rich’s downtown department store on Thanksgiving night.

It then moved to Crystal Bridge, then to Underground Atlanta and finally made its way to Lenox Square. After an incident in 2012, a switch was made to an artificial tree in 2013, but the Macy’s team is planning to keep adding height to the tree over the years.
