Worship, nursing and music under one roof

Did you know one of Atlanta’s most popular music venues began as a church?

The Tabernacle opened in 1910, simultaneously housing Third Baptist Church and Georgia Baptist Medical Center and nursing school, led by Dr. Leonard Gaston Broughton. Broughton founded the church in 1898 and was led to the Tabernacle when he decided to expand.

After the congregation relocated in the mid-1980s, the building wasn’t used until the 1996 Olympics when it became a House of Blues club. Now, the site is a well-known, midsize concert venue and has featured artists such as Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.
