Haunted Atlanta: Historic Lawrenceville Jail

Betsy, will you meet me, in heaven above…” These are the cries heard throughout the halls of the Historic Lawrenceville Jail, once sung by a slave whose life ended there.

Elleck found himself in jail after confessing to police that he killed his drunk and belligerent master, Colonel James Austin, in self-defense. After a biased trial, he was thrown in jail where he was to wait until his hanging.

After chipping away at the walls to escape, he was chained to the floor on his hands and knees. Here, his cries to his wife can still be heard today.
