Grady Memorial Hospital: a Dream Realized

by sally@the100companies.com

In June 1892, Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta’s first public hospital, opened its doors to serve as a segregated medical center for the city’s residents.

To address the growing concern of quality health care for Atlanta’s poor, Henry Grady had the vision to create a hospital owned and operated by the city to provide services to all Atlanta citizens.

The hospital became well-known throughout Georgia and the United States during the 1920s after a Grady physician performed Georgia’s first open-heart surgery in 1921, and in 1923, it opened the world’s first and largest comprehensive cancer center, the Steiner Clinic.
