A New Home for the Cyclorama Painting

by

After close to a century of calling Grant Park home, “The Battle of Atlanta” cyclorama painting was packed up and moved to a new place.

The nearly 131-year-old painting was moved to the custom-built Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building at the Atlanta History Center. The painting has been an Atlanta fixture since 1892 and is one of only 17 surviving cycloramas left from the late 1800s.

The two-day transport required the painting be rolled onto twin 45-foot-tall steel spools, each weighing 11,000 pounds. The cyclorama is slated to open in 2018.
