For the past 85+ years, Henri’s Bakery has supplied generations of Atlantans with freshly baked bread, desserts and wax-paper wrapped gourmet sandwiches.
Henri’s Bakery was founded in 1929 in Midtown by French chef Henri Fiscus. In the early years, Henri focused strictly on baking, only adding sandwiches when business was slow. The sandwiches were an instant hit and remain one of the bakery’s main draws. Other guest favorites include their famous cheese straws, European-style pastries and cakes.
Since relocating to Irby Avenue in 1969, Henri’s Bakery has called Buckhead home. In the 1980s, a second location opened in Sandy Springs.

I got suspended from school for one day for sneaking off campus in high school to eat lunch at Henrico… Totally worth it. In college, I’d make money by ‘running sandwiches’ back to college on Sunday….I’d take orders on Friday, come home for the weekend, buy anywhere from 10-30 sandwiches and then take them back to campus ( Converse College, Spartanburg,SC) and the ‘mark up’ would pay for my gas Roundtrip ) . All these years later, I still always make a trip to Henri’s part of a trip home!!!
Too bad we were not at converse at the same time, you would have had a steady customer.
From Midtown Henri’s relocated to the strip mall at the corner of P’tree & Piedmont in the mid fifties. I use to fave my lunh monies for Henri’s poorbot sandwich & 45 records. My first Poorboy was in the spring of 1956 at P’tree. Me & my friends would race after friday class at RL Hope to get a Poorboy. Then they moved to West Paces Ferry rd the Shopping center that had the Big Star in it. they had the spot where Kelly’s Seed & Feed was located. then they moved to Irby. And, beside Sandy Springs location there was a branch also at Pine tree Shopping Center in Chamblee.
