Atlanta’s Wren’s Nest

The oldest house museum in Atlanta, Wren’s Nest is named after a bird’s nest once found in the mailbox. George Muse, founder of Muse’s Clothing, built a simple home in the lot off of today’s Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in 1870.

Prominent Atlantan and Atlanta Constitution editor Joel Chandler Harris later transformed the house into a large Queen Anne-style Victorian residence. There, he wrote most of his famous Uncle Remus tales – a collection of African-American folktales featuring trickster Br’er Rabbit – until his death in 1908. The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 and offers tours and storytelling.
