Sugar spent the long summer night crying in her bed, knowing something was wrong with her baby. She was late term, but she wasn’t feeling as much movement as she had the previous weeks. She wanted to tell her husband but Alex was out again.
She rang the brass bell next to her bed and when Zhong, their Chinese servant, opened the door, she asked, “Where is Alex?”
Zhong started to close the door, but Sugar shouted her question again.
“He not say,” Zhong said.
“But you know!” Sugar said.
“He not say,” Zhong said again and closed the door.
