No other name is as quintessential to Atlanta as “Peachtree.” The classic name originates from Standing Peachtree Creek, located by today’s Standing Peachtree Park. However, some historians speculate the name was originally “pitch tree,” another name for the surrounding pine trees, but was corrupted over time.
The creek was used for travel between the Creek and Cherokee nations and served as a point of entry for white traders.
Today, 71 Atlanta streets boast the Peachtree label. The primary Peachtree Street, where The Georgia Trust calls home, begins at Five Points, runs through Midtown, then changes to Peachtree Road in Buckhead.
