Standing in the parlor of one of the Macon Magnolia sororities she was hoping to join, Sugar realized she was late for her appointment.
Running up the marble steps of the Wesleyan Female College’s Georgian administration building, she ran into the reception area.
“I appreciate you agreeing to tutor the sisters from China,” President Ainsworth began. “Their father was my college classmate and he has entrusted his daughters’ education to me. The Soong sisters are from one of the wealthiest families in China. I’d like you to tutor them in English.”
“I don’t speak Chinese,” Sugar said.
“Soon you will.”
