We bought groceries at the strangest brands

Bi-Lo store

Growing up, we bought our groceries at Winn-Dixie. I found even stranger brands as a young itinerant reporter, moving through small Southern towns like a bad storm.

In Mississippi, we shopped at Jitney Jungle. In Georgia, we found bargains at Piggly Wiggly.

When we moved to South Carolina, we had to learn the language of Bi-Lo, a chain featuring cows on its roofs to promote beef. One day, Bi-Lo built a superstore and adorned it with three cows on its roof. Folks drove for miles to see the three cows – until college students stole them for pranks.
