If you’re on social media, there’s no doubt you’ve recently seen endless “10-year challenge” posts from friends and celebrities. The idea is simple: post a photo of yourself in 2009 next to a photo of you from 2019 and rejoice at how far we all have come in the last decade.

While it’s fun to take a trip down memory lane, one widespread criticism of the challenge is that participants are unknowingly giving up valuable data. Privacy experts say companies could use the millions of publicly shared photos to help train algorithms that power artificial intelligence and facial recognition.
