Did you have bacon and eggs for breakfast today? If so, thank the “Father of PR,” Edward Bernays.
Until 1925, Americans enjoyed an “English Breakfast” of coffee, tea and toast. The Beech Nut Packing Company, purveyors of pork, wanted to change that. They hired Bernays, who surveyed 5,000 doctors, asking if they recommended a light or hearty breakfast. Overwhelmingly, they endorsed hearty. Citing “expert” survey results, Bernays placed stories in American newspapers, noting bacon and eggs met that criteria. Breakfast was transformed.
